Trader’s Call to Arms
The sonnet Traders’ Call To Arms that many consider to be the central poem of Eugene Schlanger’s book September 11 Wall Street Sonnets was included in a recent business book published by the Univ. of Michigan Press entitled What Poetry Brings to Business. The premise of this new book is that an understanding and appreciation of the language and the art of poetry can only enhance the critical thinking of business. That sonnet was dedicated to Constantine Economos of Sandler O’Neill who perished in the World Trade Center on Sept. 11 and who had recently joined a financial industry regulatory committee chaired by Mr. Schlanger. The index of poets in the business book is a veritable who’s who of English, European, American and other modern and contemporary poets. Editions Underbahn is delighted that one of its writers is included in this important book, suggesting the importance of poetry and business to culture.
